Post-Race Lessons

One of the hardest things I found with training for this longer distance race was recovery.  After the long runs on Saturdays, I found a couple of things that are really helpful for me. 

I’ve mentioned them before, but I use some essential oil supplements.  There are two that have been vital in this training.  One is a natural energy supplement and one is a muscle and joint relief supplement.  The energy supplement was fantastic on the day of the race, since I was dead tired from the night before, and groggy when I woke up late!  The muscle and joint relief supplement also comes in an oil and lotion form – and you can be sure I use them all!  The muscle and joint relief supplement was great throughout the entire training.  This supplement has extracts of ginger, curcumin, resveratrol, and other polyphenols to soothe occasional muscle aches – and after the tough workouts my coach suggested, I needed all the help I could get to recover!

So the week before the race, we actually ran 7 miles, a mile longer than the actual race.  That day, after the run, my feet were swollen the rest of the weekend, and my legs felt like cement and jello at the same time.  I knew that after the race, I needed to do a couple of things to make sure I didn’t feel like again.

Once I got home, after I ate, I took the muscle relief supplement, and then I took a hot bath with a couple of drops of lavender essential oil in the water.  Talk about relaxing!  After the bath, I actually took a nap!  Honestly, I spent most of the rest of the day with my feet up in some way.  My roommate and I went to see a movie with awesome recliner seats, and I kicked my feet up right away.  I also rolled out with a foam roller that night before going to bed, following up with the muscle ache relief lotion.

Trust me – doing all these things, I woke up the next morning with NO soreness whatsoever.  Granted, I was still a little tired, but I didn’t feel soreness or swollen feet.
